NextPhase Reader Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 11, 2026
Last updated: October 2, 2026
Responsible company: NextPhase LLC
Privacy contact: support@nextphaseapps.com
This policy explains how NextPhase LLC (“NextPhase”, “we” or “us”) handles information when you use NextPhase Reader or contact us about Reader. It covers desktop and iPhone/iPad, with differences noted below. Features differ by platform and version; the information involved depends on the features you use.
For this website and its prepared demos, see Website privacy. For practical help, see Reader support.
At a glance
- Your reading starts on your device. The installed app keeps a local library, reading progress, saved vocabulary and settings.
- Online features involve online services. Translation, online voices, catalogs and optional account or sync features can send information outside your device.
- You control what you send for support. Please do not include passwords, API keys or private book content in a support message.
1. Reading in the installed app
Reader stores information on your device to make reading and learning work. Depending on your platform and use, this includes:
- imported books, document text, covers and library organization;
- reading positions, preferences and reading statistics;
- cached translations;
- saved words, sentence context and review activity;
- downloaded language or voice resources and rendered audio.
Local storage does not mean that every feature operates offline. Online features described below make network requests, including when you use the app without an account. Your operating system’s backup or device-sync services may also handle app data under their own settings and policies.
Export anything you want to keep before uninstalling or clearing app data. Removal behavior varies by operating system and installation method; uninstalling is not a request to delete an online account.
2. Accounts and optional sync
Where available, account and sync services use Supabase. Signing in can involve your email address, account identifier, authentication information and profile information supplied by your sign-in provider, such as a name or avatar. These services also process technical information needed to operate and secure sign-in.
When you enable supported sync features, information needed for those features can be stored online. This can include library records, book files and covers, translations, vocabulary and review activity, reading positions and statistics. Availability and sync coverage differ by platform and version.
Turning off sync stops further syncing through that feature. It does not, by itself, erase information already stored online or copies held on other devices. Signing out is also different from deleting an account.
3. Translation, voices and connected libraries
- Online translation: Text submitted for translation, source and target languages, provider settings and information needed to authenticate and deliver the request leave your device. On iPhone/iPad, Reader’s free translation engine uses Google and can fall back to Microsoft when Google cannot return a translation. A fallback can send the same passage to both services.
- Online read-aloud and audio generation: The text to be spoken, voice or language selection and technical request information go to the selected service. Edge voices use Microsoft’s online speech service, including when preparing a recording to save locally.
- On-device translation and voices: Text is processed locally for that operation. Downloading a model, voice pack or update still requires a network request. An online engine or fallback, if used, has the separate data flows described above.
- Public catalogs: Searches, requested records, covers, availability checks and downloads are sent to the catalog or content host.
- Connected OPDS libraries: Requests and any authentication information needed by the library server you configure go to that server.
An online service also receives technical information associated with its connection, such as an IP address. Some hosted features route requests through a NextPhase service before reaching the selected provider. Other configured providers may have their own authentication and processing requirements.
See Google’s privacy policy, Microsoft’s privacy statement, and the terms and privacy information for any other provider or library you configure. Their retention and processing practices depend on the particular service and account used. The free translation and Edge voice integrations should not be assumed to have the same data terms as paid Google Cloud Translation or Azure Speech accounts.
If you want text processed on your device, choose a supported on-device engine and check its availability for your language and platform. Translation quality, model downloads and feature availability are separate from privacy settings.
Provider keys and credentials
Credential handling differs by platform. Desktop provider keys use the operating system’s credential store and are used when making the selected provider’s requests. Hosted web functionality can use server-side secret storage. On iPhone/iPad, saved provider keys, account-session credentials and connected-library credentials use Apple’s Keychain. Credentials are used to authenticate requests to the relevant service; secure storage does not mean that authenticated requests stay on your device.
Do not include keys or credentials in screenshots or support messages. Removing a saved provider key from Reader does not revoke that key at its provider; use the provider’s controls when you need to revoke it.
iPhone/iPad purchases and free allowances
Reader Pro purchases on iPhone/iPad are processed by Apple through the App Store. Reader uses StoreKit to check purchase entitlements and keeps a local record of verified Pro ownership and check status so supported features can remain available offline. NextPhase does not receive your payment-card details through this purchase flow. Apple handles payment and related account information under Apple’s privacy policy.
Reader also keeps an on-device record of gifted-book access and free-feature allowances in the Keychain. This includes book identifiers derived from the book, grants and allowance usage. These records can remain after reinstalling the app. Deleting a Reader account is separate from Apple’s purchase records and does not itself request a refund.
App notices
On iPhone/iPad, Reader can download an app-notice feed from NextPhase. The feed request does not include your book text or Reader account identifier, but the hosting service can receive connection information such as your IP address. You can turn off the notice feed in Settings → What’s new.
4. Exports, sharing and support
When you export or share content, the file or information you choose is passed to the destination you select. A bilingual book, vocabulary file, rendered audio or screenshot may contain book text, translations, personal notes or learning history. Check the contents and destination before sharing. Copies you export are outside Reader’s control.
If you contact support, we receive your message, reply address and any details or attachments you choose to send. We use them to answer your request, investigate the problem and maintain the service. Email and support infrastructure process these communications as part of delivery and storage.
Start with the app version, platform and a description of the problem. A redacted screenshot or a short non-sensitive example is usually more useful than an entire book. See Reader support for guidance.
5. How information is used and disclosed
We use information to provide requested features, maintain accounts and services, respond to support requests, investigate failures and protect against misuse. Service providers handle information needed to perform those functions, including hosting, authentication, sync, selected translation or speech services, and communications.
We do not sell your personal information or use your reading content for targeted advertising. Using a third-party feature still involves the disclosures described above. We may also disclose information when required by applicable law or when reasonably necessary to protect the security, rights or safety of users and our services.
6. Storage, retention and security
Local information remains subject to your device’s storage, deletion and backup settings. Online account information, synced content, support messages and operational records have different storage and retention needs. We retain information as needed for its stated purpose and applicable obligations. Deletion may take time to reach connected devices, service systems and backups; it should not be understood as immediate removal of every copy.
We use platform credential storage and service access controls to protect information. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure. Keep your device and account secure, and share only what is needed when asking for help.
Service providers may process information in countries other than where you live. The services involved depend on your settings and the features you use.
7. Your choices and privacy requests
You can manage local books and saved words, choose supported on-device processing, remove saved provider settings, and control available sync options. Export options vary by source format and platform.
For account deletion or a request to access, correct, export or delete information we hold, email support@nextphaseapps.com. We may need to verify that the request relates to you. We will handle requests in accordance with applicable law, including any permitted exceptions.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights, such as restricting or objecting to certain processing, withdrawing consent where processing relies on it, or contacting a relevant privacy regulator. A request to NextPhase does not automatically delete information held independently by a translation provider, app store or other service.
If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can review the situation and take appropriate action.
8. Changes and contact
We will update this page and its last-updated date when our practices change. Where required, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent before a change takes effect. Future features are not covered by a blanket permission to collect additional information.
Questions about privacy can be sent to the contact listed at the top of this page. For reading, installation or technical help, visit Reader support.
